Simply put Reiki is a laying of hands touch healing system. It is a Japanese technique that was re-introduced to the world by Dr. Mikao Usui. The word Reiki pronounced "Ray-Kee" is translated as spiritual energy.

Reiki as we know it today was developed by Dr. Usui a Buddhist priest, went on quest to learn to heal in the same way as Jesus had done. In mentioning Jesus, it is important to know that Reiki is not linked to any religion. It is seeing more a spiritual practise. his quest took him to a monastery where he was advised to meditate to find the answers he wanted.

As he ended a 21-day fasting retreat Mikao was hit by a great white light. In this light he saw sacred symbols and was given a deep understanding of them he received spiritual empowerment enabling him to receive and give this spiritual healing onto others.

As he left the mountain, he struck his toe on a rock and automatically placed his hand on it, the pain left, and he was healed. He proceeded to heal a man of arthritis and a girl of a toothache. Realising he had finally discovered the healing power that Jesus had, he went on to spend many years healing others before he passed on the teachings to a Dr. Chujiro Hayashi who is responsible for delivering it to the west. All Reiki lineages will always lead back to Dr. Mikao Usui.

Reiki is used to promote self-healing in the body of the receiver. To engage in self-healing using the Reiki principles as a guide to live your life by is very important. As Reiki is seen a holistic healing it is important that the mind, body, emotions and spirit all work in harmony together.

Today when we perform Reiki, we use the chakras (energy centres) in the body to create balance and rid body of disease.

There are 7 main chakras in the body starting at the root working up.
